Workflow, Cycle and Method of Qualitative Data Collection
Workflow of Qualitative Data Collection
This is determined independently by each faculty.
Cycle of Qualitative Data Collection
Unlike the fixed cycle for the quantitative survey, with this tool the faculties have the advantage of being able to wait until they have the analyses of the quantitative survey before deciding whether they require a further survey of graduates. Nevertheless it is advisable to have data at degree programme level from at least every other graduate year group. If there are serious changes in the area of imparting skills and vocational qualification, then it is advisable to review each year group.
Method of Qualitative Data Collection
The guidelines for the structured interview were developed jointly with the faculties and staff from the Quality Management team at Student and Academic Services. Telephone or face-to face-interviews are then held with graduates using these guidelines, primarily questioning them on their experiences while studying and at the start of their career. The interviews are recorded and then transcribed and analysed. Since this tool means an enormous workload for analysis, it is not used comprehensively for all degree programmes, instead, it is only recommended for degree programmes that have small cohorts (fewer than six students) and therefore cannot deliver results at degree programme level by analysis of the quantitative survey. If the guide lines need revising, then the work group is reactivated to develop a suitable proposal, which is then presented to the network of representatives from the Offices of the Deans of Studies and advice service representatives for agreement. The individual faculties are responsible for deciding whether it is worth including additional questions for data collection along with those in the guidelines. These can then be independently integrated into the interviews.
